Vittorio Storaro
(Roma, 1940)
He defines  himself “ author of the cinematographic photography”
Vittorio Storaro,son of an operator, started to study photography when he was 11, continuing by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.
For many years he worked as operator until in 1968 he got his first assignment as photography director in the film Giovinezza Giovinezza (Franco Rossi).
He has worked longtime with Bernando Bertolucci, taking care of the photography of most of his films (La strategia del ragno, Il Conformista, Ultimo tango a Parigi) and with other important film directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Warren Beatty.
In the meantime he went on with his studies on the light until he arrived to his own style which will mark his own creativity and cinematographic vision
In 1980 he wins his first Oscar thanks to the masterpiece of Coppola, Apocalypse Now; in 1982 the second one with Reds (Warren Beatty) and in 1988 the third one with L’Ultimo Imperatore (Bertolucci).
He his member of the Academy Awards and since 2005 he is president of the jury of the International Film Festival of Locarno
Directors such as Luigi Bazzoni, Dario Argento, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Fabio Carpi, Giuliano Montaldo, Salvatore Samperi, Luca Ronconi, Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Coppola, Warren Beatty but also  Carlos Saura and Alfonso Arau, have driven his maturity process in the cinematographic style, allowing him to get with the years, a more and more conscious research on the possibility of expression using the light inside the image.
His experiences on the theory of the colours are collected in the three volumes Scrivere con la luce (Electa 2002). This title became also a master course that Storaro  organized from 1995 up to 2004 by the Accademia Internazionale delle Arti e delle Scienze dell´Immagine in L´Aquila.
